Our story - Godalming Funeral Service

Background

Godalming Funeral Service was established in 2022 to serve families in the local community under the leadership of experienced Funeral Director Paul Weightman.

The branch was established when Paul chose to join Funeral Partners, which invested in restoring a former funeral home where he used to work before it closed in 1990.

With more than 40 years in the profession, Paul now serves as Senior Funeral Director.

In 2023, son Anghus Weightman, a respected Funeral Director in his own right, joined the business, further strengthening the family-led approach that underpins the service.

Considerations

For Anghus, Funeral Partners stood out because of its people-first approach and long-term commitment to the profession.

“What drew me to Funeral Partners from the outset was their genuine commitment to helping people grow,” he said. “They don’t just acquire funeral homes – they invest in people, communities and the long-term future of the profession.”

The decision to join Funeral Partners, he added, was met with understanding from the local community, many of whom recognise the pressures associated with running an independent funeral home.

“When we explained that joining Funeral Partners would enable us to maintain the same high standards of care while achieving a more sustainable work-life balance, families valued the honesty behind our decision.”

“They understood it allowed us to focus on what matters most – arranging and conducting funerals with compassion, dignity and attention to detail, without the constant pressure of running every aspect of a business.”

The Logistics

Funeral Partners initially invested in the new Godalming branch, taking on the financial responsibility and ensuring full compliance from the start.

Anghus and Paul did not join the organisation with an existing team and were quickly welcomed into the wider network.

“From the very beginning, we were made to feel welcome and supported.”

The integration process was designed to provide both structure and reassurance. Anghus spent six months working at another funeral home, gaining valuable insight into operational practices and learning what he describes as ‘the Funeral Partners way’.

“Day one was a mixture of excitement and nerves, but I was warmly welcomed. The team were patient, supportive and generous with their knowledge. It felt collaborative rather than corporate, and that made all the difference.”

Moving Forward

Looking ahead, Anghus particularly values the flexibility to continue serving the community he knows so well while benefiting from the resources of a larger organisation.

With specialist teams across HR, compliance, marketing, fleet and property providing ongoing support, he has the reassurance that operational matters are expertly managed, allowing him to focus on developing the service for the long term.

“Funeral Partners trust us to do what we do best while giving us the freedom to shape our service locally. It means we can focus on caring for families, reassured that the operational side is being taken care of.”

Continued enhancements have ensured the Godalming branch remains warm, modern and welcoming for families, while the team has expanded since opening with Christina Cook joining as Funeral Arranger.

“Any issues we report are dealt with promptly, and improvements are made without hesitation. It’s reassuring to know the environment we work in – and the facilities families rely on – are always maintained to a high standard.”

The Result

Today, more than three years into the partnership, the team at Godalming Funeral Service are proud of what has been achieved and optimistic about the future.

“Becoming part of a larger organisation has introduced greater structure, shared expertise and a strong sense of belonging, while allowing us to remain true to our personal, community-focused approach.”

“The support has never faded, the partnership remains strong, and our business continues to grow. We are still very much at the beginning of our journey, but we can look forward with confidence to building on this strong foundation as we continue to serve our community.”
