Hammerton’s Funeral Directors of South Yorkshire has become the latest business to join Funeral Partners, which now has more than 200 funeral homes across the UK.
Established for more than 200 years, Hammertons has its roots in Worsborough Dale, where it was the local undertakers, wheelwrights and joinery business. Originally located close to the former Dove and Dearne canal, its deliveries of timber for the joinery workshop arrived by barge.
In the early twentieth century, Francis Hammerton was commissioned to build the Church of St. James in the growing community of Worsborough. The business continued to thrive and, in 1984, moved to larger premises in Wakefield Road, Barnsley, where Hammerton’s became established as the area’s leading funeral directors.
In 1977 Ian Hammerton took over the established business of nearby funeral director George Bateman and, in 2011, relocated it to purpose-built premises in Goldthorpe, near Rotherham. After Ian sadly died in 2014, his wife Jane Hammerton took over the running of the business’ three funeral homes, which include Wombwell Funeral Services in Wombwell.
Phil Barr, Regional Development Director for Funeral Partners in the North of England, said: “This is a thriving business and I look forward to working with the operational team, who will remain with Hammerton’s to build on their strong reputation for caring for local families and supporting their communities. Although Jane will be stepping back from day to day operations, she will continue to support us.”
Sam Kershaw, CEO of Funeral Partners said: “Funeral Partners is continuing its strategy of growth through acquisition and we are delighted to welcome the team at Hammerton’s to our family. We are committed to maintaining the heritage of our family businesses, while investing in their future.”
Funeral Partners continues to invest in businesses with strong reputations at the heart of their local communities, with more than 100 family businesses across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
